Israeli troops remain in Gaza, marking a significant escalation of the conflict

Israel and Hamas have been engaged in a major conflict since the beginning of October, with each side launching multiple attacks on the other. On October 28th, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) escalated the conflict by sending ground troops into Gaza. This marked the first time they had sent troops into the Palestinian territory since 2014.

The IDF said their goal was to destroy Hamas' underground tunnel network which has been used to smuggle weapons and provide personnel with safe passage. The IDF also sought to destroy missile launch sites and other military targets.

However, the move also put innocent civilians at risk since it meant that Israeli forces were now directly engaging in combat with Hamas militants. As a result of this escalation, civilian casualties have risen dramatically. Over 100 Palestinians have been killed in just two weeks as a result of the IDF's incursion into Gaza.

In response, Hamas launched a series of rocket attacks targeting Israeli towns and cities. This prompted the Israeli government to launch an air campaign against Hamas targets, leading to even more civilian casualties.

Since then, there has been little progress made towards a cease-fire. The current situation has left the people of Gaza living under the threat of continued violence and uncertainty. With no end to the conflict in sight, the prospects for peace remain bleak.
