Muslim students at University of Connecticut received threats over Israel-Gaza war
In a historic moment, Joe Biden has been confirmed as the 46th President of the United States. After four days of recounts in some states, the electoral college has finally pinned the Democrat candidate as the winner of the 2020 election with 306 electoral votes.
The victory was announced after Biden won Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes on Saturday night, putting him above the 270 threshold. After the result was declared, Biden delivered an emotional speech from his home state of Delaware in which he called for national unity. He also promised to end the "uncivil war" in America.
The 200-year-old tradition of the Electoral College crowning the president continued even amid the divisive campaign and the turbulent transition period. While no significant changes were made to the process, the pandemic-induced voting modifications and the fears of foreign interference did raise some concerns.
The final vote count put Biden ahead by more than 7 million ballots, but Trump refused to concede and his camp has promised to file lawsuits challenging the outcome of the election. On Sunday, the White House said it had started the transition process.
This was a hard fought race with Biden leading in the polls since early summer. His campaign focused on healthcare, climate change and racial equality. He also promised to roll back many of Trump's policies, including immigration.
Just hours before the final count, Biden held a rally in Wilmington, Delaware where he reminded Americans that “democracy is sometimes messy” but “it is always worth it”. The 78-year-old also shared his plans for the country, saying he wants to focus on the health of American families and rebuilding the middle class.
This election marks the fifth time in US history that a sitting president has been defeated. With the world watching, Biden will now have to unite the nation and decide how to tackle the country’s most pressing issues.
